FARDC-Wazalendo Coalition Reportedly Advances Toward Ngungu and Rubaya

The coalition of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) and allied Wazalendo militias is reportedly regaining momentum in Masisi Territory, North Kivu Province, with pro-government media claiming the alliance is advancing toward the strategic town of Ngungu and the mineral-rich mining center of Rubaya following days of intense fighting with AFC/M23 rebels.

According to Radio Okapi, multiple sources from the area indicate that clashes intensified on Monday, June 29, with sustained exchanges of heavy and light weapons reported around Kabingu, located along the Ngungu axis in the Bahunde Chiefdom. Residents also reported hearing explosions from artillery and bombs during the early hours of the day, suggesting that fierce battles are ongoing over key military positions.

Sources cited by the broadcaster say the latest offensive began early on Friday, June 26, when Wazalendo fighters, backed by FARDC, launched coordinated attacks across several locations in Masisi Territory. The operation reportedly extended into parts of neighboring Kalehe Territory in South Kivu Province.

After two days of heavy fighting, the coalition is said to have captured several strategically important positions. These reportedly include Kasake, located near Ngungu and Rubaya, as well as the hills of Runigi and Kanyarubere in Kibabi Groupement. Control of these elevated areas is considered significant, as they provide advantageous positions for further military advances toward major population centers.

Civilians Face Growing Uncertainty

Beyond Ngungu and Rubaya, fighting is also reported to be affecting other localities, including Kasenyi, Luke, and surrounding areas in the Osso-Banyungu sector. The continued presence of both opposing forces has heightened concerns among civilians, many of whom remain trapped in areas affected by the hostilities.

Additional clashes were also reported on Friday in Mindjendje, located in Walikale Territory, and in Bibwe, within Bashali Mokoto Groupement in Masisi.

The renewed offensive comes after fighting around Rubaya—one of eastern Congo's most important mining hubs—was reported last month. At the time, FARDC and its allies had attempted to advance in the area but were reportedly pushed back by AFC/M23 forces following intense confrontations.
