RDF Reportedly Evaluating Precision Strike Options Against FDLR and Allied Armed Groups
The Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) is reportedly assessing the possibility of conducting precision strikes against the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) and allied armed groups operating in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and parts of Burundi, according to security analysts.
Analysts caution that any such operation would present significant operational challenges. They note that FDLR fighters are frequently reported to operate in close proximity to units of the Congolese armed forces (FARDC) at several locations in eastern DRC, increasing the complexity of distinguishing targets while minimizing the risk of unintended casualties.
Despite these challenges, analysts argue that the possibility of precision strikes could serve as a deterrent against the continued co-location of FARDC and FDLR elements. They suggest that if FDLR positions are positively identified through reliable intelligence, targeted military action could be considered, potentially encouraging FARDC to distance itself from the group.
The analysts further contend that such a scenario could place additional pressure on the Congolese government, which has consistently denied allegations of collaboration between FARDC and the FDLR.
According to regional security experts, dismantling entrenched armed groups—including the FDLR—is essential to improving long-term security across the Great Lakes region. They argue that lasting stability would create conditions for stronger regional cooperation and help unlock the region's significant economic potential.
