Is Rwanda the superpower , or is the President of the DRCongo simply incompetent? Premium

A debate has emerged across the Great Lakes region and beyond: How has a small country like Rwanda managed to become such a powerful regional actor, while the much larger Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), with its enormous population, territory and natural resources, continues to struggle with insecurity in its eastern provinces? The contrast between the two neighboring countries is striking. The Democratic Republic of Congo has a population of more than 112 million people and is one of the richest countries in the world in terms of mineral resources, including cobalt, copper, gold and other strategic minerals. Rwanda, by comparison, has a population of around 14.5 million people and a territory roughly 1.1% the size of the DRC. Yet, despite this difference in size, Rwanda has built a reputation as one of the most organized and influential countries in the region. The Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) is widely regarded as a disciplined and structured military institution, with a strong focus on training, intelligence, modernization and the use of advanced military technologies. Rwanda’s supporters argue that the country’s strength comes not from its size, but from its organization, strategic planning and investment in national security. The country has also gained international recognition through its participation in peacekeeping missions around the world, where Rwandan forces have been deployed under United Nations and other international frameworks. The ongoing conflict in eastern DRC has intensified comparisons between the two countries. The Congolese government has repeatedly accused Rwanda of supporting the M23 armed group, allegations that Kigali denies. Rwanda has instead highlighted security concerns linked to armed groups such as the FDLR, which it says poses a threat to its national security. Over the years, the DRC government has relied on various forms of external support, including regional military partnerships, foreign security contractors, and alliances with local armed groups known as Wazalendo. However, despite these efforts, instability has continued in parts of North Kivu and South Kivu. The fall of Goma in early 2025 further exposed the challenges facing the Congolese security system. Reports that hundreds of foreign military contractors were captured during the fighting highlighted the complexity of the conflict and the involvement of multiple foreign actors. Some critics argue that Kinshasa has struggled because of weak military organization, political instability and poor coordination, despite having significant advantages in population and resources. They claim that whenever the Congolese government faces military setbacks, it often points to Rwanda as the main cause, reflecting what they describe as a deep concern over Rwanda’s growing regional influence. However, others argue that the situation cannot simply be explained by military strength alone. They point to decades of political instability, ethnic tensions, foreign interference and governance challenges that have affected eastern Congo for many years. The question of whether Rwanda has become an African "superpower" or whether the DRC has failed to use its potential remains highly debated. What is clear is that Rwanda’s influence in the region has grown far beyond what its size would suggest, while the DRC continues to search for a lasting solution to its security challenges.
