Rwandan Artist Yampano Remanded for 30 Days
The Primary Court of Kicukiro has ordered the provisional detention of Rwandan musician Uworizagwira Florien, popularly known as Yampano, for 30 days after finding sufficient grounds to suspect him of three criminal offenses.
The ruling was delivered publicly on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, following a hearing in which prosecutors presented their case and the artist was given an opportunity to defend himself.
The court determined that there was enough evidence to justify suspicions that Yampano committed the offenses of assault and battery, consumption of cannabis, and destruction of another person's property.
However, the court found that prosecutors had failed to provide sufficient grounds to support allegations related to criminal threats, attempted murder, and unlawful confinement.
As a result of the ruling, Yampano will remain in custody for 30 days as investigations and legal proceedings continue. He is expected to be transferred to Mageragere Prison during the provisional detention period.
During the hearing, Yampano requested to be released, arguing that he had been forgiven by his wife, Diane. The court, however, ruled that the alleged forgiveness did not constitute a legal basis for his release and therefore could not influence its decision.
The musician's case has attracted public attention in Rwanda, with many closely following developments surrounding the charges against the popular artist.
