The Force Commander of UN peacekeeping troops in Juba, Brigadier General Mohammad Iqbal Hossain, on Tuesday visited the 3rd Battalion of the Rwanda Defence Force serving under the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) in Juba.

The visiting commander was received by the battalion commander, Colonel Innocent Rwaka Muhirwe, who briefed him on the unit’s responsibilities, highlighting in particular the protection of civilians as a core task of the peacekeeping mission.

During the visit, Brig. Gen. Hossain commended the Rwandan peacekeepers for their professionalism, discipline, and dedication to duty. He emphasized that protecting civilians remains the primary responsibility of UN peacekeeping forces operating in South Sudan.

He also reminded the troops to strictly observe the Rules of Engagement, stressing the importance of restraint and the careful use of force, especially in situations where military action may not be necessary.

Reflecting on his recent visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, the Force Commander underscored the weight of responsibility carried by peacekeepers deployed in conflict zones. He assured the Rwandan contingent that the UNMISS leadership will continue to support them in addressing operational challenges encountered in their day-to-day duties.
