Olise Shines as Bayern Munich Overpower Real Madrid at the Bernabéu
Real Madrid’s defensive frailties were laid bare on a dramatic night at the Santiago Bernabéu, as Bayern Munich seized control through an inspired performance from Michael Olise.
Moments after Bayern’s second goal, Madrid left-back Alvaro Carreras was seen gesturing in frustration, arms outstretched as he pleaded for support. Isolated and overwhelmed, Carreras struggled to contain Olise, who repeatedly exploited the space down the flank.
Madrid’s defensive imbalance proved costly. Vinicius Junior failed to track back effectively, while Aurelien Tchouameni was preoccupied in midfield battles, leaving Carreras exposed against one of Europe’s most in-form attackers.
Bayern’s dominance was orchestrated by Joshua Kimmich, whose tactical awareness allowed him to repeatedly find Olise in dangerous positions. Kimmich delivered 17 passes to the winger, who relentlessly attacked Madrid’s back line in what pundit Jamie Carragher described as “one of the performances of the season.”
Despite Manuel Neuer earning the official man-of-the-match award with nine crucial saves to deny Madrid forwards Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior, it was Olise who emerged as the standout figure.
The 24-year-old, born in London and formerly of Crystal Palace, delivered a decisive contribution by assisting Harry Kane for the winning goal. The assist marked his sixth in this season’s UEFA Champions League campaign—more than any other player so far.
Olise’s performance further cemented his growing reputation on the European stage. Having already impressed in the previous round against Atalanta, his impact has drawn widespread praise. Former Germany international Christoph Kramer even described him as the best Bundesliga signing of the past decade.
