Gatsibo: Teacher arrested over alleged defilement of student
A teacher has been arrested in Gatsibo District over allegedly sexually abusing a 16-year-old female student, who had gone missing for days. The teacher is in the custody Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB).
Reports indicate that the girl had not returned home since Friday, March 6, 2026, prompting her parents to begin searching for her. On Monday morning, they went to the school and asked the administration to help locate their daughter who is in Senior One.
It is said some teachers told the administration they had seen the student entering the suspect's room in the teachers' residence at the school located in Kabarore Sector, Gatsibo District.
The girl was later found asleep in the teacher's room.
Jean Claude Rugaravu, the Executive Secretary of Kabarore Sector, confirmed the incindent.
“We received information from the school head that a teacher had been keeping a student he teaches in his room for several days," Rugaravu said.
"Since Saturday, the child had been staying in his room in the teachers’ residence. We went there and found her inside. We took the child to a health facility, while RIB officers took the teacher into custody for investigation,” he said.
The suspect is currently detained at the RIB station in Kabarore.
