Ugandan Soldier Commits Suicide After Watching Arsenal–Manchester United Match in Kisoro

A Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldier in Kisoro District has committed suicide by shooting himself inside his unipot shortly after watching the English Premier League match between Manchester United and Arsenal at Nyanamo Trading Centre in Nyanamo Town Council.
The deceased has been identified as RA. 267544 Pte. Samuel Kwesiga, 32, attached to Nyanamo Detach under the 35th Battalion in Kisoro District. His body was discovered on Monday, August 18, at around 7:00am in Kigyeyo Village, Nyanamo Town Council.
Investigations reveal that on Sunday, August 17, at about 6:00pm, Kwesiga went to watch the Manchester United–Arsenal game. At around 9:00pm, he returned to the detach, informed colleagues that he was tired, and went to rest in his unipot after locking himself inside.
According to police reports, residents heard a gunshot from his unipot. At first, they suspected it was an accidental discharge. When colleagues rushed to the scene and called his name, there was no response. They later peeped through the window and saw him lying in a pool of blood. The door was broken open, and he was found dead with a gunshot wound.
The Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, Elly Maate, said police officers working with the UPDF documented the crime scene. A spent cartridge and a rifle with four magazines were recovered as exhibits.
Maate added that witness statements were recorded and the body was taken to Kisoro Hospital mortuary for postmortem before being handed over to the UPDF command for burial arrangements.
He noted that inquiries are still ongoing to establish the motive behind the suspected suicide.
