DRCongo’s Tshisekedi Pledges to Reclaim M23-Controlled Areas “Soon”

Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo has pledged to reclaim territories in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) currently under the control of AFC/M23 rebels, vowing imminent action to restore government authority in the troubled region.

The Congolese leader made the remarks on Sunday, April 5, during a ceremony held in honor of the national football team, Les Léopards, which recently secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The tournament will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The celebratory event saw President Tshisekedi reward players with new vehicles—predominantly Toyota Land Cruisers—along with housing and other incentives, recognizing their achievement in returning the DRC to the World Cup after a 52-year absence.

In his address, Tshisekedi praised the team’s performance, singling out head coach Sébastien Désabre and captain Chancel Mbemba for their leadership and contribution to national pride.

Looking ahead to the tournament, Tshisekedi expressed confidence in his team, dismissing fears ahead of a group-stage clash with Portugal. He noted that Congolese players regularly compete alongside Portuguese counterparts in European leagues and possess the capability to defeat any opponent.

While clarifying that winning the World Cup was not an expectation, he remarked that such an achievement would be “extraordinary” for the nation.

The president also highlighted the emotional impact of the team’s success on citizens living in eastern DRC, where conflict has persisted for years. He emphasized that the joy sparked by the qualification has reached even those in areas currently under rebel control.

Tshisekedi reaffirmed his commitment to reclaiming key cities including Bukavu, Goma, Masisi, Sake, and Bunagana—areas that have fallen under AFC/M23 control over the past one to four years.
