AFC/M23 Accuses Congolese Army of Deadly Attacks on Civilians

The rebel group AFC/M23 on Friday claimed that at least two civilians were killed and another seriously injured following attacks allegedly carried out by a coalition of government forces in Mikenke, a locality in South Kivu province in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

According to AFC/M23 spokesperson Lawrence Kanyuka, the attacks began বৃহস্পতিবার রাত at approximately 9:40 p.m. and continued into the early hours of Friday, ending around 8:20 a.m. He said the offensives targeted densely populated civilian areas in and around Mikenke.

Kanyuka stated that the violence resulted in the destruction of numerous homes, forcing many families to flee and spreading fear among local residents.

“These attacks killed two people, seriously injured one, destroyed many houses, and left several families in deep distress and mourning,” he said.

The AFC/M23 spokesperson also accused authorities in Kinshasa of failing to honor commitments made during peace negotiations. He further alleged that the government continues to collaborate with armed groups operating in South Kivu.

Kanyuka went on to assert that Kinshasa should be held fully accountable for what he described as acts of exclusion and targeted killings based on ethnicity in Minembwe, as well as ongoing violence against civilians across eastern DR Congo.
