Thousands of Anti-Rwanda rebels reportedly deploy to South Kivu After Burundi training
Approximately 4,000 fighters linked to the P5 coalition opposing the Rwandan government have reportedly arrived in Mulenge, South Kivu province in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, after completing a period of military training in Burundi.
According to multiple sources, the fighters reached the Ndondo highlands on Saturday, April 4, marking a significant movement of armed groups within the region.
However, the group is said to be facing logistical challenges, particularly a shortage of weapons. This follows a recent fire at Camp Base, a military installation in Musaga, a suburb of Bujumbura, which reportedly destroyed a cache of arms intended for deployment.
The weapons had allegedly been transferred from a military facility in Mwaro province and were expected to be transported to eastern Congo before the incident occurred. Sources indicate that the blaze also consumed several CH-4 combat drones, heavy weaponry, and military equipment, including uniforms.
Upon arrival in Mulenge, the P5 fighters were reportedly received by Lt. Nyamusalaba Alexis, a figure associated with the Gumino armed group, which has operated in coordination with elements of the Congolese security apparatus. He is also believed to have longstanding ties with the P5 coalition, which includes the Rwanda National Congress (RNC), led by exiled opposition figure Kayumba Nyamwasa.
