DRC pulls out of UCI Road World Championships in Rwanda amid regional tensions

RDC withdraws its athletes from the 2025 UCI Road World Championships in Kigali, Rwanda, citing security concerns and regional tensions

The Cycling Federation of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has announced that it will not send its athletes to the 2025 UCI Road World Championships, set to take place in Kigali, Rwanda, from September 21 to September 28, 2025. This historic event marks the first time the championship is held on African soil, attracting top cyclists from around the globe.

The decision was confirmed by Jean-Claude Congolo, Secretary-General of the DRC Cycling Federation, who cited security concerns linked to Rwanda as the main reason. He explained:

“DRC was attacked by Rwanda, the country hosting the championship. The women’s national team stationed in Goma was targeted by [M23]. This is why DRC will not participate.”

The move received backing from DRC’s Minister of Sports, Didier Budimbu, who emphasized that no Congolese athletes would travel to Kigali for the championship.

While the official stance is clear, many Congolese cyclists expressed deep disappointment. Speaking to Radio France Internationale (RFI), athletes said they had been eager to compete, seeing the championship as a rare opportunity to gain international exposure and experience on the world stage.

The withdrawal highlights the impact of regional tensions on sports and raises questions about how political and security issues influence athlete participation in international competitions. Meanwhile, Rwanda is set to host 917 elite cyclists from 110 nations, with the capital city fully prepared to welcome a global audience for this landmark sporting event.
