Burundi’s army says it arrested Rwandan soldier near border

Burundi’s National Defense Forces (FDNB) have announced the arrest of a soldier from Rwanda’s Defense Forces (RDF). According to a statement released on Wednesday, September 24, the soldier, identified as Sergeant Sadiki Emmanuel, was taken into custody by police in Busoni Commune, Butanyerera Province (formerly Kirundo) around midnight.
The FDNB said the soldier, reportedly a driver by profession, crossed the border from Rwanda into Burundi using a side path near the Gasenyi–Nemba border post along the RN14 road. Police intercepted him about 700 meters inside Burundian territory. He allegedly admitted that he had come from a bar near the RDF military camp in Gako and lost his way.
According to the FDNB statement, the soldier attempted to escape but was caught. He is currently being held at the Kirundo police station as investigations continue.
So far, Rwanda’s Defense Forces have not issued any statement regarding Burundi’s claim about the soldier’s arrest.
