Singida Black Stars win CECAFA Kagame Cup

Tanzania’s Singida Black Stars claimed their first trophy on Monday with a 2-1 victory over Sudanese club Al Hilal Omdurman in the final of the CECAFA Kagame Cup.

Zambian playmaker Clatous Chama scored a brace to lift his new club to a historical milestone in their brief nine-year history. The arrival from fellow Tanzanian club Young Africans opened the scoring in the 19th minute with a low finish and his second goal arrived close to the hour mark from an Andy Koffi cross to make the difference in Dar es Salaam.

Abdel Raouf equalized for Al Hilal in the 31st minute but the Sudanese club, also featuring some new signings, struggled to show their best form throughout the tournament. Singida will receive $30,000 in prize money for winning the tournament while Al Hilal receive $20,000.

Receiving $10,000 for their efforts is Rwanda’s APR FC, who won third place earlier on Monday following a 1-0 victory over Kinondoni MC. Burkinabe attacker Memel Dao completed an excellent tournament with the new signing scoring the only goal of the match before halftime.

Winning the CECAFA Kagame Cup represents a statement of intent from Singida Black Stars, who begin play in the CAF Confederation Cup this coming weekend when they face Rwanda’s Rayon Sports in the first leg from their first qualifying round clash.
