Rwanda signs deal with Qatar’s Philex to expand access to cancer and heart medicines

The Rwanda Medical Supply (RMS) has signed a partnership agreement with Philex, a pharmaceutical and medical equipment company operating in Qatar, to expand access to essential medicines in Rwanda, including treatments for cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and hypertension.

The signing ceremony was attended by Rwanda’s Ambassador to Qatar, Igor Marara, and is seen as a significant step in strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two countries in the health sector.

Philex, whose headquarters are located in the Salalah Industrial Free Zone in Oman, is a leading pharmaceutical manufacturer that works with various countries across the globe. The company uses advanced technology to produce a wide range of medicines, including life-saving drugs for cancer and heart-related conditions. Recognized internationally for quality and professional packaging, Philex is also committed to providing affordable medicines and medical equipment in the region, contributing to improved public health.

On Sunday, August 17, Philex also signed a partnership with Rwanda-based Labophar Ltd, which will facilitate the importation of tablets and powder-based medicines into Rwanda.

This agreement builds on the strong diplomatic and economic ties between Rwanda and Qatar. In 2024, during a virtual address at the Global Security Forum, Rwandan President Paul Kagame emphasized that Rwanda’s relationship with Qatar is grounded in implementing transformative projects aimed at boosting both nations’ economies and improving citizens’ well-being.

President Kagame cited major joint projects, such as the expansion of Kigali’s Bugesera International Airport and strengthened cooperation in the aviation sector. He further highlighted Rwanda’s development strategy, which focuses on unity, education, food security, technology, industrial growth, and healthcare.

Beyond economic and infrastructure projects, Rwanda and Qatar also maintain growing cooperation in defense and security, underscoring the broad scope of their bilateral partnership.
