M23 Rebels Capture Strategic Nzibira Airport, Advance Toward Shabunda in South Kivu

Rebels from the M23 movement have seized control of Nzibira, a key mining hub in Shabunda territory, along with its airport previously used by the Congolese army (FARDC), as they push deeper into South Kivu Province. The advance follows heavy fighting that erupted on Thursday, August 7, 2025, in Walungu territory.
Local sources report that the clashes began after M23 launched a major offensive against positions held by the pro-government Wazalendo militia. The assault, which involved the use of armed drones, targeted multiple towns including Cagala, Murali, Mwirama, and Nzibira. The bombardment forced hundreds of families to flee towards Budodo, Cisaza, and Mugaba in search of safety.
The capture of Nzibira comes shortly after the rebels took Kaniola and other strategic locations in Walungu. Rebel units are now said to be moving towards the Shabunda territorial headquarters. Analysts and local observers warn that M23’s maneuvers suggest a possible push beyond Ihombo towards Lubutu, opening a pathway to Kisangani in Tshopo Province.
Witnesses told Bwiza news outlet that M23 drones also struck Kaniola town and mining facilities in Ntula, killing at least 10 people and injuring many others. The use of such tactics has intensified fears among residents in nearby communities, where panic and mass displacement are growing.
The renewed escalation underscores the widening scope of M23 operations in eastern DRC, raising concerns about the group’s strategic ambitions and the capacity of national forces to contain its rapid advances.
