President Kagame opens UCI congress as Rwanda hosts historic cycling world championships
President Paul Kagame officially opened the UCI Congress in Kigali on Thursday, marking a historic moment as Rwanda hosts the UCI Road World Championships for the first time on the African continent.
Addressing delegates, Kagame highlighted the impressive global participation, with 108 countries represented in the championship, including 36 African nations — the highest number in the history of the competition. “We are delighted to welcome athletes and fans from near and far,” he said, noting the growing role of cycling in Africa.
Kagame emphasized that in Rwanda, cycling has become more than just a sport; it has transformed lives and driven development. “We have invested in cycling as a national sport. Thanks to our partners, these efforts turned Tour du Rwanda into one of Africa’s premier races and laid the foundation for further growth,” he explained.
He further underscored the broader benefits of hosting global sporting events. “Sport has become a channel for development, creating multiple opportunities. Hosting world-class competitions accelerates progress and multiplies the gains,” Kagame said, encouraging continued collaboration to expand the sport across Africa.
