Israeli Ambassador welcomes Rwanda-DRC peace agreement as a step towards regional stability

The Ambassador of Israel to Rwanda, Einat Weiss, has warmly welcomed the recent peace agreement signed between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), describing it as an important milestone towards lasting stability in the region.

Ambassador Weiss shared her views on Sunday through a post on her official X (formerly Twitter) account. She stated:

“We welcome the historic peace agreement between the DRC and Rwanda, a significant step towards stability and prosperity in the region. Peace is essential for the well-being of people in an area that has experienced nearly 30 years of conflict. We are encouraged by this diplomatic decision that will lead to a safer region.”

Rwanda and the DRC signed the peace agreement on Friday, June 27, 2025, in Washington, D.C., USA. The deal aims to ease the long-standing tensions between the two neighbouring countries and to address insecurity that has plagued Eastern DRC for decades.

The agreement includes commitments to respect each country's sovereignty, prevent further conflicts, cease hostilities, disarm and reintegrate non-state armed groups into civilian life, and establish a joint security monitoring team. It also outlines plans for facilitating the repatriation of refugees, supporting the UN peacekeeping mission in the DRC (MONUSCO), and enhancing regional economic cooperation.

Notably, the agreement contains provisions for joint efforts to dismantle the FDLR rebel group, which has been destabilizing parts of Eastern Congo.

This is not the first time Ambassador Weiss has spoken about the tensions between Rwanda and the DRC. In  2024, she emphasized Rwanda’s right to defend itself, stating:

“I know that every country has the right to defend itself, and what Rwanda truly wants is to protect its borders and its people. It is important to understand the root causes of the crisis in Eastern DRC in order to resolve it effectively.”

She added:

“I say this as someone with experience. The President [of Rwanda] said at the African Union Summit that he has the right to defend his country and will do whatever it takes. That is a strong and important message, and I believe many understood it.”

The recent peace agreement has sparked optimism among regional and international observers, who hope it will mark the beginning of an era of stability, economic growth, and improved humanitarian conditions in the Great Lakes Region of Africa.
