FARDC deploys troops and heavy weapons near M23-Controlled areas

The AFC/M23 coalition has accused the Congolese national army (FARDC) of massing troops and military equipment along multiple frontlines, a move they claim undermines ongoing diplomatic efforts to resolve the eastern Congo conflict.

In a statement released by AFC/M23 spokesperson Laurence Kanyuka, the group expressed concern that FARDC, alongside Burundian troops, have deliberately positioned heavy weaponry within densely populated areas.

“What is even more worrying,” Kanyuka said, “is that this coalition of forces, including Burundian soldiers, has intentionally stationed heavy weapons in civilian zones. This decision, which lacks any justification, constitutes crimes against humanity.”

The statement further accused Kinshasa of disregarding and insulting the peace negotiations by escalating military deployments instead of prioritising dialogue.

“These talks, which our movement calls to be prioritised, must address the root causes of conflict in the DRC. With its continued acts of war, Kinshasa is openly sabotaging the diplomatic process,” Kanyuka added.

According to the group, despite AFC/M23 complying with its commitments under confidence-building measures, the Congolese government has failed to honour its part.

The rebel movement reiterated its “unwavering commitment to resolving issues through political dialogue” but warned that, in the face of what it described as military provocations and crimes against innocent civilians, it reserves the right to protect its fighters and the territories under its control.

This development comes amid intensified regional tensions, despite renewed calls by international mediators for a negotiated settlement to end violence that has displaced millions in eastern DRC.
