Clashes with security forces in Cameroon kill 4 protesters ahead of election results

At least four people were killed and more than 100 arrested during clashes between protesters and security forces in Cameroon, as opposition supporters demanded transparent results from the country’s recent presidential election.

The violence erupted in several cities, including Douala, Garoua, and Maroua, following calls by opposition candidate Issa Tchiroma Bakary, who claims to have defeated longtime President Paul Biya in the October 12 election.

According to Littoral Region Governor Samuel Dieudonne Ivaha Diboua, four protesters died and several security officers were injured in Douala after attacks on police stations. Over 105 demonstrators were arrested.

Protest videos showed crowds confronting security forces, who responded with tear gas and gunfire. Authorities said some protesters had planned violent acts, while opposition groups accused the government of election manipulation and suppressing dissent.

Tensions have been high in the lead-up to the vote, as 92-year-old President Biya, Africa’s oldest leader, sought to extend his decades-long rule. Opposition supporters say his administration disqualified key rivals and used state institutions to tilt the election in his favor.
