CHAN 2024: Uganda Cranes edge Guinea to get first win

The Uganda Cranes secured their first victory of the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN) Group C, defeating Guinea 3-0 at Namboole Stadium in Kampala on Friday, August 8.
The victory against Guinea came as an important turnaround for the hosts who had lost against Algeria on the same scoreline and it now reignites their hopes of advancing to the knockout stages.
The Cranes took the lead in the first half thanks to a powerful header from Reagan Mpande in the 35th minute.
The lead was extended in the 62nd minute when Allan Okello confidently converted a penalty before Ivan Ahimbibwe put the game to sleep in the 90th minute, with a beautiful finish, sending the home crowd into ruptures.
Bafana hold Algeria
South Africa’s Bafana Bafana and Algeria played out to a 1-1 draw in their clash at the Mandela National Stadium on Friday afternoon.
Algeria opened their group campaign with a convincing 3-0 win over hosts Uganda on Monday but were held by a resilient make-shift South Africa squad led by Molefi Ntseki.
The attacking quality of the North Africans was telling and Abdennour Belhocini opened the scoring in the 29th minute.
As the game headed into the break, Bafana Bafana found the equaliser as Thabiso Kutumela delivered impressive goal in the 45th minute.
Following this win and a 1-1 draw between Algeria and South Africa, the group standings are now much tighter.
Algeria remains at the top of Group C with four points, followed by Uganda and Guinea, both with three points.
South Africa and Niger are fourth and fifth ahead of their game in hand.
