Accident kills 11 in Rubavu
A tragic road accident on Saturday afternoon claimed the lives of 11 people near Gisenyi Hospital in Rubavu town after a cargo truck overturned, hitting a vehicle and a motorcycle.
The accident occurred at around 2:00 PM in Nyaburanga Village, Nengo Cell, Gisenyi Sector, when a cargo truck (Mercedes-Benz, license plate KBH 185 Y) experienced brake failure. The driver, Dida Suleiman, 60, a Kenyan national, survived the crash with injuries.
According to Rubavu District officials, the truck first struck a motorcycle carrying two people, who died instantly. A pedestrian was also killed on the spot.
The truck continued uncontrollably and crashed into a taxi carrying eight passengers who were returning home to Rugerero Sector after attending church in Rubavu town.
All occupants of the taxi lost their lives, except a child who survived and was rescued alive from the wreckage.
Western Province Police Spokesperson, Superintendent of Police Sylvestre Twajamahoro, urged all road users to remain vigilant, avoid overspeeding and other practices that may lead to accidents.
Further investigation into the accident is ongoing.
