Mugisha on target as Rwanda beat Zimbabwe in South Africa

A sensational first half strike from forward Gilbert Mugisha was enough for Rwanda to beat Zimbabwe at home to Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa, on Tuesday, September 6, to keep their World Cup 2026 qualification hopes alive.

Fresh from 1-0 loss to Nigeria in Uyo, Rwanda responded with what marked the very first win under coach Adel Amrouche.

And, despite having Marshall Munetsi back in the squad from suspension, the Warriors struggled again on a neutral ground and stay at the bottom of Group C with four points.

Meanwhile, Amrouche and his men will thank Fiacre Ntwari’s heroics between the posts, especially when the Kaizer Chiefs shot stopper made a super save to deny Zimbabwe an equalizer at the stroke of full time.

Rwanda have now climbed to third place with 11 points and are level on points with second-placed Benin who host Lesotho at Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, on Tuesday.

Nigeria again dropped to fourth place with 10 points before visiting table leaders South Africa at Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein.
