M23-AFC takes control of several areas of Katana

On Sunday, July 13, the M23-AFC rebel coalition captured several strategic areas in the Irhambi-Katana groupement, Kabare territory, South Kivu Province, without any fighting.

Local sources report that towns previously under the control of Wazalendo militias fell to the rebels after some militia members allegedly disclosed critical strategic information to the enemy. As a result, the M23-AFC advanced swiftly, facing no resistance.

The rebels now occupy key mountainous positions, including Mulongo-Murefu, Bushenge, Muzuka, and Mulanga, located near the renowned Kahuzi-Bièga National Park. Witnesses in the region reported that the rebels have since deployed significant reinforcements to consolidate their control over these areas.

This latest development comes amid ongoing discussions aimed at finding a peaceful resolution to the security crisis that has plagued eastern Democratic Republic of Congo for decades.
