Junior Rumaga signs agreement to develop historic Kiruri Hill into cultural and tourism hub

On January 8, 2026, renowned Rwandan poet Junior Rumaga signed an agreement with the Mayor of Huye District, Sebutege Ange, granting him rights to develop Kiruri Hill—long regarded as a historic stronghold of poets and artists—through his company, SIGA Rwanda.

Kiruri Hill, located in the Karama area of Huye, is a culturally significant site historically reserved for poets and artists since Rwanda’s pre-colonial era.

The hill’s legacy dates back to the 18th century under King Yuhi Mazimpaka, when the poet Nzabinariba’s famous poem “Inka zigira ishorera” led the royal court to allocate Kiruri Hill to artists as sustainable support.

Rumaga said the project has been in preparation since 2016 and aims to preserve Kiruri’s literary heritage while transforming it into a cultural tourism destination. He plans to promote the site widely and organize an annual cultural and literary festival,
