DR Congo’s President Tshisekedi to Meet U.S. AFRICOM Chief in Kinshasa
President Félix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo is expected to meet on Thursday with U.S. General Dagvin Anderson for high-level talks focused on security cooperation.
Gen. Anderson serves as the commander of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), which oversees U.S. military operations on the African continent. His visit to Kinshasa comes as the Congolese government seeks to deepen military ties with Washington amid ongoing insecurity in eastern DR Congo.
Diplomatic sources say discussions between Tshisekedi and Anderson are expected to center on strengthening bilateral military cooperation, including training for Congolese armed forces, the potential supply of U.S. military equipment, and enhanced intelligence-sharing.
Kinshasa has for some time expressed interest in signing a formal defense cooperation agreement with the United States. Congolese officials hope such a partnership would bolster the country’s military capacity as it confronts armed groups operating in the east.
Gen. Anderson arrived in Kinshasa after a stop in Accra, Ghana, where he held talks with President John Dramani Mahama on regional security cooperation.
