Death toll rises in FARDC–Wazalendo clashes over food aid

The death toll from violent clashes between the Congolese armed forces (FARDC) and their Wazalendo militia allies in Uvira, South Kivu, has risen to 11, according to updated local reports.

Calm was restored to the city on Tuesday, November 25, following two days of heavy fighting that left residents shaken and fearful. The unrest erupted on Sunday during a World Food Programme (WFP) food distribution exercise meant to support vulnerable households in the area.

The confrontation is reported to have begun near the Catholic Cathedral in Uvira, where WFP teams were overseeing the distribution. Witnesses say members of the Wazalendo militia attempted to forcibly take part of the food supplies intended for crisis-affected families. Their actions triggered a violent standoff with FARDC troops, which quickly escalated into an exchange of gunfire.

Initial clashes on Sunday claimed nine lives and left two people wounded. By Monday, as the fighting spread to other neighborhoods in Uvira, two more people were killed and two additional injuries were recorded.

The victims are said to include both FARDC soldiers and Wazalendo fighters. Local sources indicate that the violence stemmed not only from the dispute over humanitarian aid but also from simmering tensions and power struggles between the two groups, who have been uneasy allies in recent months.
