Remco Evenepoel wins third straight time trial world title

Belgium’s Remco Evenepoel continued his time trial dominance by winning his third consecutive gold medal in the Men’s Individual Time Trial (ITT) at the 2025 UCI Road World Championships, held in Kigali on Sunday, September 21.

Evenepoel completed the 40.6-kilometre course in 49 minutes and 6 seconds, securing his third straight ITT world title after previous victories in Glasgow (2023) and Zurich (2024). He crossed the finish line at the Kigali Convention Centre (KCC) with a commanding lead of 1 minute and 15 seconds over Australia’s Jay Vine, who finished second.

Fellow Belgian Ilan Van Wilder took third place, earning a surprise bronze medal in what was his first-ever appearance in a World Championship time trial event.

Slovenian Tour de France champion and current world number one, Tadej Pogačar, had a difficult ride on the challenging Kigali course. He finished fourth, 2 minutes and 37 seconds behind Evenepoel, who dramatically overtook him just past the Women’s Foundation stony climb in Kimihurura.

Pogačar is expected to return to action in the 267.5km road race on Sunday, September 28.

Rwanda’s Shemu Nsengiyumva was the first rider to start, and he ultimately placed 25th, finishing 6 minutes and 55 seconds behind the winner. Fellow Rwandan Moïse Mugisha placed 31st in a field of 54 riders.

At the back of the pack, Edward Jalal of South Sudan finished in last place, 43 minutes and 18 seconds off the pace.

The 2025 UCI Road World Championships continue on Monday, September 22, with the Men’s and Women’s U23 ITT events set to take place on the streets of Kigali.
