M23 seizes Makobola as fighting intensifies on Uvira–Fizi Axis
Heavy fighting erupted on Sunday morning in Uvira territory, South Kivu province, as fighters from the Congo River Alliance (AFC/M23) clashed with Wazalendo armed groups.
According to these sources, the confrontations began in Lwanga, a locality along the strategic axis linking Uvira to Fizi. The area, which has been largely submerged for years by the waters of Lake Tanganyika, has remained highly volatile. By midday, the clashes had shifted southwards to Makobola 1, the last village in Uvira territory bordering neighboring Fizi territory.
“The fighting was ongoing around noon in Lwanga between Wazalendo fighters and M23 elements, and it has now moved to Makobola 1,” a local source told AFP. Other witnesses reported repeated shuttle movements by boats on Lake Tanganyika, suggesting troop repositioning or logistical support.
Makobola 1 represents the final locality within Uvira territory, while Makobola 2 marks the entrance into Fizi territory. Local sources confirmed that AFC/M23 fighters had reached Makobola 1, where they were engaged in combat with Wazalendo elements. Armed groups affiliated with Yakutumba and Makanaki were reportedly positioned in Makobola 2.
Several residents and local observers warned that the risk of the clashes spreading into Makobola 2 and deeper into Fizi territory remains high, raising concerns over further instability and civilian displacement along the Uvira–Fizi corridor.
