FARDC launches heavy artillery attacks in Ruzizi Plain, Says M23

Government forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) launched heavy artillery attacks early Tuesday in the Ruzizi Plain, located in South Kivu province, according to the March 23 Movement.

The information was confirmed by AFC/M23 spokesperson Lawrence Kanyuka, who said the strikes targeted the main RN5 road linking the cities of Bukavu and Uvira, particularly in the Kabunambo area.

In a statement posted on X, Kanyuka said the bombardment began at around 6:40 a.m., with government forces reportedly using heavy weapons in densely populated areas.

Full-scale war launched by the Kinshasa government has reached a new level on the RN5 axis in the Ruzizi Plain,” he stated.

AFC/M23 claims the attacks caused deaths and significant damage, forcing many civilians to flee their homes amid escalating insecurity.

The group also reported additional attacks in Bidegu, Mikenke, and surrounding areas in Minembwe commune.

M23 condemned what it described as escalating violence, urging both citizens and the international community not to ignore what it called serious violations.

Such crimes must not be downplayed or overlooked,” Kanyuka added.
