DRC using Burundi as launch pad for new offensive, M23 claims

The M23 rebel group has accused the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) government of shifting its military operations base to Bujumbura, Burundi, as part of preparations for a major offensive to recapture Bukavu and Goma.
Speaking at a press conference in Goma, M23 spokespersons alleged that drones and aircraft now striking their positions are operating from Bujumbura. They further claimed that the Congolese government has purchased kamikaze drones, intended for targeted attacks on M23-held territories, raising fears of escalated violence in eastern Congo.
The group also commented on the ongoing Doha peace talks, saying they have participated in four rounds so far and are planning to attend a fifth. However, M23 expressed frustration, accusing the DRC government of using the peace process merely to buy time to reinforce its military strength, with the ultimate goal of expelling M23 from its controlled areas.
These allegations emerge as the Doha talks continue to be viewed regionally and internationally as a crucial step towards achieving lasting peace in eastern Congo. However, mutual accusations between the DRC government and M23 of preparing for war instead of genuine dialogue threaten to undermine the peace efforts.
