AFC/M23 Captures Nyakabere Centre as Fighting Intensifies in South Kivu

Armed rebels of the AFC/M23 continued their rapid advance on Monday, December 8, seizing control of Nyakabere Centre in Uvira Territory after pushing back government-aligned forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Nyakabere, located about 40 kilometers north of Uvira town, is considered a strategic position on the corridor leading toward Uvira — the second-largest urban center in South Kivu Province. The capture of this area signals that AFC/M23 is steadily closing in on the city, raising concerns about a possible escalation of the conflict in the region.

In addition to Nyakabere, the rebels also took control of Kanyunda. This follows earlier gains at the end of last week when AFC/M23 fighters reportedly seized Rurambo and Luvungi, further expanding the territory under their control.

Meanwhile, heavy clashes between AFC/M23 and the Congolese national army (FARDC), backed by pro-government militias, continue to rage in the Sange area. Local sources report ongoing movements of armed groups and heightened tension as civilians flee renewed fighting.
