Wazalendo Commander “General” Obed Ngabo Killed in Fighting Near Rubaya
A militia commander known as General Obed Ngabo, affiliated with the Coalition Libérale pour la Démocratie — one of the Wazalendo groups allied with the government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in its conflict against Alliance Fleuve Congo/March 23 Movement — has reportedly been killed by AFC/M23 fighters.
Sources from eastern Congo said Obed Ngabo’s body was discovered on Friday, May 22, 2026, following clashes in North Kivu Province.
His death was later confirmed by Ngarambe Manzi Willy, the deputy governor of North Kivu aligned with AFC/M23 authorities.
In a statement posted on X, Ngarambe accused the militia commander of having recently participated in attacks targeting civilians in eastern Congo before being killed.
“Two days ago, he burned civilians’ homes. Today, the world is a better place without the self-proclaimed General Obed,” Ngarambe wrote.
He further claimed that Ngabo had “joined” several deceased anti-M23 figures, including Rugayamikore Ruhinda, the former commander of the FDLR special forces, Sylvestre Mudacumura, former head of FDLR-FOCA, and Peter Cirimwami Nkuba, the former military governor of North Kivu.
According to local sources, Obed Ngabo was killed during fighting near the strategic mining area of Rubaya in Masisi Territory, where clashes between AFC/M23 fighters and pro-government armed groups have intensified in recent weeks.
