Clashes erupt between AFC/M23 and FARDC in Ruzizi Plain
Brief clashes were reported on Thursday between fighters of the AFC/M23 movement and the Congolese national army (FARDC), backed by Wazalendo militias, in the Ruzizi Plain, particularly in Kanga, Rugeje, and Itisha areas of Kigoma Grouping in Uvira Territory, South Kivu Province.
According to information from local administrative authorities, at least three civilians were killed during the fighting.
Further details obtained by Kigali Daily News indicate that the sound of both light and heavy weapons was heard from early Thursday morning, January 29, 2026, extending into parts of Fizi Territory in South Kivu Province.
Sources from civil society organizations reported that gunfire began around 10:00 a.m., particularly in the western area of Bibokoboko, heightening fear among local residents
