AFC/M23 condemns Global Silence amid renewed FARDC Attacks

The Alliance Fleuve Congo/March 23 Movement (AFC/M23) has criticized the international community for what it describes as continued silence in the face of intensified military operations by the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) against its positions.

The accusations were voiced by Bertrand Bisimwa, president of M23 and deputy coordinator of the AFC coalition. In a message posted on his X account, Bisimwa claimed that the Kinshasa government had once again violated the ceasefire by launching what he described as large-scale, coordinated attacks across multiple frontlines.

“We note that the Kinshasa regime has once again trampled on the truce, initiating general offensives on all battle lines and beyond. This is a well-prepared and large-scale operation, reflecting a deliberate choice of the military option,” he wrote.

Bisimwa expressed what he called “serious concern” over the lack of what he termed clear and visible action from the international community to immediately halt the ongoing offensives.

“There has been no public condemnation, no denunciation, and no concrete measures taken to prevent the risk of further escalation,” he stated.

According to the M23 leader, the perceived silence contrasts sharply with what he described as the swift condemnation the group faces whenever it responds militarily to attacks.

Escalating Violence

The statement comes amid renewed clashes between FARDC and AFC/M23 forces in eastern DR Congo. On Tuesday, a drone strike in the Rubaya area killed Lt. Col. Willy Ngoma, the military spokesperson of the group’s armed wing, the ARC.

Reports indicate that on Wednesday, Congolese government forces intensified operations, particularly in Masisi Territory, where heavy fighting has been reported.

AFC/M23 has also accused FARDC of launching attacks in South Kivu province, including in Rutigita in Minembwe, Kitazungura in Kalehe Territory, and in the Rugezi area of Minembwe.
