President Kagame Arrives in Washington

President Paul Kagame arrived in Washington, D.C., in the United States to attend the signing ceremony of a landmark peace agreement between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

According to the Office of the President, which announced the visit through its official X account, Kagame will meet U.S. President Donald Trump and participate in the signing of what has been termed the “Washington Agreement.”

On June 27, Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Olivier Nduhungirehe, and his Congolese counterpart, Thérèse Wagner Kayikwamba, signed the initial peace accord aimed at ending nearly three years of conflict between the two neighboring countries.

On Thursday, December 4, Presidents Kagame and Félix Antoine Tshisekedi are expected to formally ratify the agreement during a ceremony at the White House, presided over by President Donald Trump.

The event will also be attended by leaders from Qatar, as well as several African heads of state, including Kenya’s President Dr. William Ruto, Togo’s President Faure Gnassingbé, Burundi’s President Evariste Ndayishimiye, and Angola’s President João Lourenço.

One of the central commitments in the peace accord is the dismantling of the FDLR, a Rwandan genocidal militia viewed as a key source of insecurity in eastern DRC. Both countries have already begun coordinated military operations aimed at neutralizing the group.

Under the Washington Agreement, Rwanda will also lift its defensive security measures once the FDLR threat is eliminated.

Additionally, Rwanda and DRC plan to sign agreements to strengthen regional economic integration, including cooperation in mineral trade, energy infrastructure, and the protection of national parks shared by the two nations
