Egypt and Cape Verde Earn Valuable Points in World Cup 2026 Openers

African representatives Egypt and Cape Verde started their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaigns with important draws on Monday, June 15, securing valuable points in their opening matches.

In Group G, Egypt held Belgium to a 1-1 draw. Emam Ashour gave the Pharaohs the lead in the 20th minute after being set up by Mohamed Salah. Belgium equalized in the 68th minute through an own goal by Egyptian defender Mohamed Hany.

Egypt continued to push for a winner through stars such as Salah and Omar Marmoush, but Belgium’s defense stood firm, forcing both sides to settle for a point.

In Group H, Cape Verde produced one of the tournament’s early surprises by holding Spain to a goalless draw. Goalkeeper Vozinha delivered a standout performance, making several crucial saves to deny the Spaniards and earning the Man of the Match award.

Other results:

  • Group H: Saudi Arabia 1-1 Uruguay
  • Group G: Iran 1-1 New Zealand

The results provide a positive start for Africa’s representatives as they look to advance to the knockout stages of the tournament being hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
