Uganda Army Chief Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba in Rwanda

July 25, 2026 – Uganda's Chief of Defence Forces and Senior Presidential Advisor on Special Military Operations, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has arrived in Rwanda for a two-day official visit aimed at strengthening military cooperation and regional security ties between the two neighboring countries.

Gen Muhoozi landed at Kigali International Airport on Saturday, July 25, where he was received by the Chief of Defence Staff of the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF), Gen Mubarakh Muganga.

Also present to welcome the Ugandan military chief were Major General Willy Rwagasana, Commander of the RDF Presidential Guard, and Colonel Ezekiel Matsiko, Uganda's Defence Attaché to Rwanda.

According to official information, Gen Muhoozi's visit will focus on enhancing defence cooperation between Rwanda and Uganda through discussions with senior RDF commanders. He is also expected to hold talks with President Paul Kagame during his stay.

The visit comes as the two countries continue efforts to deepen bilateral military relations and strengthen collaboration on regional peace and security.

Gen Muhoozi last visited Rwanda in March 2025, when he met senior RDF leadership and toured the Nyakinama Military Academy in Musanze District. During that visit, he delivered a lecture emphasizing the importance of African military cooperation in promoting peace and stability across the continent.

Addressing military officers at the academy, Gen Muhoozi stressed that the combined capabilities of the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) and the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) would be capable of overcoming any security challenge.

His latest visit is expected to further reinforce defence diplomacy and strategic cooperation between Kigali and Kampala as both countries continue to work closely on shared security interests in the Great Lakes region.
