SAMARKAND, Uzbekistan — Azerbaijan is stepping up national preparations to implement the Kigali Amendment, a global agreement aimed at reducing the use of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), powerful greenhouse gases commonly used in cooling systems.

The announcement was made by Mukhtar Babayev, Azerbaijan’s Representative on Climate Issues and President of COP29, following his participation in a side event on the Green Cooling Transition Accelerator organized by United Nations Industrial Development Organization during the 8th Global Environment Facility Assembly in Samarkand.

In a post on X, Babayev highlighted that the growing demand for cooling is becoming both a climate and development challenge. He stressed the need for greater energy efficiency, sustainable urban planning, and the adoption of modern cooling technologies to address rising temperatures and increasing cooling needs.

Babayev also underscored the importance of regional cooperation, technology transfer, investment, and practical implementation measures to support the transition toward sustainable cooling solutions. He noted that climate action efforts are increasingly focused on delivering tangible results following COP29.

According to Babayev, Azerbaijan ratified the Kigali Amendment in 2025 and is now advancing the necessary national preparations to put the agreement into effect, marking another step in the country's broader climate and environmental commitments.
