Rwanda has been actively enhancing its air defense capabilities in recent years, integrating a range of systems to address evolving security challenges. Here’s an overview based on available information:

Man-Portable Air Defense Systems (MANPADS):

  • SA-7B (Grail-b) 9K32M Strela-2M: Rwanda operates these Soviet-era, shoulder-fired, infrared homing surface-to-air missiles, which are used for short-range defense against low-flying aircraft.

Mobile Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM) Systems:

  • WZ551 6×6 IFV (Yitian Anti-Aircraft Missile System): This Chinese-made short-range air defense system is mounted on a 6×6 WZ-551 armored vehicle chassis. It is equipped with eight Tianlong 6 short-range surface-to-air missiles.

Medium-Range Air Defense Systems:

  • Sky Dragon 50 (DK-10): Rwanda has acquired the Chinese-made Sky Dragon 50 medium-range surface-to-air missile system. This system features a range of up to 50 kilometers and is designed to engage various aerial threats, enhancing Rwanda’s airspace defense capabilities.

The Rwandan army reportedly possesses surface-to-air missiles, with multiple web sources confirming their use of sophisticated weaponry. The Rwandan Defence Force (RDF) is equipped with air defense capabilities, notably the WZ551 6×6 IFV mobile SAM system.

Rwanda has not publicly confirmed acquiring an air defense system from Russia, but there have been discussions and negotiations about such acquisitions. In 2018, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov mentioned ongoing talks with Rwanda about potential deliveries of Russian air defense systems following a meeting with former Rwandan Foreign Minister Louise Mushikiwabo.

These discussions were part of a broader military-technical cooperation framework, which also included existing use of Russian helicopters, Ural trucks, and small arms by the Rwandan military. However, there’s no concrete evidence or official statement confirming that Rwanda has indeed acquired these systems from Russia.
