Violent clashes between the Wazalendo militias and M23 rebels have intensified in South Kivu province, bringing the M23 coalition close to the strategic border town of Uvira, which lies adjacent to Bujumbura, the capital of Burundi.
The fighting, which erupted earlier this week in the territories of Uvira and Walungu, has allowed M23 forces to bypass Wazalendo lines and push further south. Since Monday, May 5, the towns of Katogota and Kamanyola have been caught in a wave of violence. Local sources confirm that Wazalendo militias initiated a surprise offensive on several forward positions held by M23 rebels, sparking fierce counterattacks.
However, the initial advantage by the Wazalendo was short-lived. M23 fighters quickly regrouped, reclaiming control over Katogota and surrounding areas of Kamanyola. Fighting then shifted to the hills of Rutebe, Kayange, and Luzinzi, where hostilities remain ongoing.
In the Ruzizi plain, rebel presence has reportedly expanded since May 5. Commanders and troops from the AFC/M23-TWIRWANEHO alliance have been sighted in Nyangezi, Kaziba, and Luhwinja, areas stretching across the territories of Walungu and Mwenga.
The standoff continued on Tuesday, with both factions claiming territorial gains and asserting dominance. Yet, military analysts and local observers suggest the tide is favoring the M23, warning that Uvira could fall imminently.
Reinforcements, including troops and ammunition, have been spotted moving from Bujumbura, raising concerns of potential cross-border escalations. Videos circulating on social media also appear to show M23 commandos mobilizing near the front lines, while the Wazalendo are reportedly regrouping and preparing for further engagement.
