The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) said two suspected terrorists were killed after an explosion went off on Tuesday, June 3, at the Munyonyo Shrine in the capital Kampala as thousands were gathering for the Ugandan Martyrs Day celebrations.

“A UPDF counter-terrorism unit this morning intercepted and neutralized two armed terrorists in Munyonyo, an upscale city suburb,” military spokesperson Col Chris Magezi said in a statement posted on X.

“It was an intelligence-led operation, and the security services are on heightened alert to ensure the Martyrs Day celebrations proceed without disruption.”

The Inspector General of Uganda Police Force told local media that a number of people were wounded by the explosion.
