Two Sudanese women die as boat grounds in English Channel
Two Sudanese women have died after a migrant boat ran aground during an overnight crossing attempt in the English Channel.
The vessel had departed from Hardelot beach in northern France with 82 people on board, all heading towards the United Kingdom.
French authorities said the boat’s engine failed shortly after setting off, leaving it overcrowded and drifting before it eventually washed ashore.
Officials believe the two women suffocated after being trapped in tightly packed conditions inside the vessel.
Sixteen others were injured in the incident, including three people who suffered severe burns caused by fuel exposure.
French maritime rescue teams saved 17 passengers, while others remained on the boat until it reached land.
The tragedy is the latest in a series of fatal attempts to cross the Channel in recent weeks.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths and the failed crossing.
