Stadium Amahoro, one of the most modern stadiums in East Africa, has now been equipped with advanced Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology, marking a significant milestone in its development as a premier sports venue.
The international stadium, which seats 45,000 spectators comfortably, was officially inaugurated six months ago and began hosting matches in August 2024. Recent updates confirm that the installation of VAR equipment has been completed, with operational testing scheduled for February 2025.
During the stadium’s renovation, a dedicated space was allocated for the integration of this cutting-edge technology, which is increasingly utilized in football officiating worldwide. The introduction of VAR at Stadium Amahoro is expected to enhance the accuracy and fairness of officiating during matches.
A football official in Rwanda, speaking to Kigali Daily News, acknowledged the progress made but refrained from specifying when the system would be fully operational. “I can’t disclose the exact timeline right now because challenges might arise during the testing phase,” he stated. “It’s important to announce such advancements only when we can demonstrate their functionality.”
The official also provided updates on the Spider Camera system, another technological enhancement planned for the stadium. The equipment is expected to arrive in Kigali by January 31, 2025. Once operational, the Spider Camera will provide dynamic overhead views, further elevating the quality of broadcasts and match analysis.
“Regarding the Spider Camera, plans are in place to ensure its functionality. However, like with VAR, there’s a process involved in acquiring and operationalizing it. People may assume it’s ready for use immediately, but thorough preparations are essential,” the official added.
