A Rwandan man’s decision to name his son after Russian President Vladimir Putin sparked resistance at a local health center in Burera District. Health officials refused to register the name until they consulted district authorities, who eventually approved it.
Munyembabazi Telesphore, a 36-year-old resident of Kagogo Sector, Nyamabuye Cell, says he admires Putin’s principles, particularly his commitment to truth, his avoidance of unnecessary conflicts, and his support for Africa’s development. Inspired by these qualities, Munyembabazi had decided months before the birth that if he had a son, he would name him Vladimir Putin, while a daughter would be named Maria Zakharova, after the Russian foreign ministry spokesperson.
In September 2023, when his wife went to the health center to deliver, Munyembabazi sent instructions for the baby’s name. Upon learning that the couple wanted to name their son Vladimir Putin, health officials were stunned. According to Munyembabazi, one of the officials even expressed strong disapproval, reportedly calling Putin “a terrorist.” Feeling insulted, Munyembabazi went to the health center to demand an explanation, questioning why his choice was causing such resistance when other names, like “Queen” or “Elizabeth,” had not been challenged.
Unwilling to compromise, Munyembabazi insisted on the name, and the matter was escalated to the health center director and eventually to district authorities. Determined to have his way, he told officials he would leave the child with them if they continued to reject the name. “I’ll keep calling until it’s settled,” he reportedly said. Finally, authorities allowed the name to be registered.
Munyembabazi explained that he views naming his son Vladimir Putin as a way to instill the values he admires in the Russian leader, especially courage and a commitment to justice. “The world is changing,” he said, adding that he believes former colonial powers, which he accuses of patronizing Africa, will eventually lose their influence.
Munyembabazi says he will one day tell his son about the significance behind his name, hoping it will inspire him to stand up for truth and against injustice.
