Rwanda Updates on Marburg Virus outbreak: 62 cases confirmed,15 deaths, vaccination efforts underway

The Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC) has announced new developments in the ongoing Marburg virus outbreak, reporting 62 confirmed cases and 15 deaths as of October 14, 2024. This update reflects one additional death and one new case since the previous report.

Currently, 21 patients remain in isolation and treatment, while 26 individuals have recovered, an increase of six recoveries. Authorities continue to track the outbreak through extensive testing, with 3,797 tests (+140) conducted so far.

Vaccination and Containment Efforts

The containment strategy has advanced with the administration of 708 emergency vaccine doses (+39), sourced from the Sabin Vaccine Institute. According to RBC, all recent cases have been identified within a hospital cluster in Kigali, and both patients and their close contacts are in isolation. Health officials have confirmed that no community transmission has been detected at this time.

Symptoms to Monitor

RBC urges the public to remain alert and watch for the following symptoms:

  • High fever
  • Severe headaches
  • Muscle aches
  • Fatigue
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea

Prevention Measures

The Ministry of Health has issued the following recommendations to reduce transmission:

  • Avoid close contact with people showing symptoms.
  • Enhance personal hygiene practices.
  • Avoid handshakes and close physical greetings.

Call for Public Vigilance

Citizens are advised to call 114 if they experience symptoms or suspect infection. Authorities emphasize the importance of public cooperation in adhering to health guidelines as the government works to contain the outbreak.
