Rwanda’s Ministry of Health has announced an update on the ongoing Marburg virus outbreak, confirming a total of 37 cases as of October 3, 2024. This marks an increase of one case from the previous day. Currently, 21 individuals remain in isolation and under treatment, while five people have recovered from the disease.

The death toll remains at 11, unchanged since the last report. To date, a total of 1,009 tests have been conducted as health authorities continue efforts to manage the outbreak through contact tracing and testing.

The Ministry of Health, continues to emphasize the importance of recognizing symptoms such as high fever, severe headaches, muscle ache, vomiting, and diarrhea. The public is urged to avoid close contact with symptomatic individuals and to maintain high hygiene standards.

Efforts to prevent further spread are ongoing, and citizens are encouraged to report any symptoms to health facilities or call the national emergency hotline at 114 for assistance.

This latest update comes as the government works closely with international partners, including Africa CDC and Gilead Sciences, to secure treatment options like the antiviral drug Remdesivir to combat the virus. Rwanda recorded its first-ever outbreak of the Marburg virus on September 27, and health authorities are working tirelessly to curb the spread of the hemorrhagic disease.
