Rwanda and Türkiye Army Chiefs Meet in Istanbul

The Chief of Defence Staff of Rwanda, Mubarakh Muganga, on Tuesday held high-level talks with his Turkish counterpart, Selçuk Bayraktaroğlu, on the sidelines of a major international defense exhibition in Istanbul.

The meeting took place during the SAHA 2026 International Defence, Aviation and Space Industry Fair, a flagship event showcasing Türkiye’s military capabilities, including advanced weaponry, combat aircraft, and cutting-edge drone technologies.

While Turkish military authorities confirmed that the two generals met, they did not disclose details of their discussions. However, analysts suggest that the talks likely focused on strengthening existing military ties and exploring new avenues for bilateral defense cooperation.

Rwanda and Türkiye have in recent years deepened their collaboration in defense and security sectors. This partnership is underpinned by agreements in military industrial development, including joint initiatives to manufacture and maintain defense equipment such as drones and light weapons, as well as plans to establish production facilities in Kigali.

Beyond industrial cooperation, both nations have also intensified collaboration in security matters, particularly in counterterrorism efforts, combating transnational crime, and capacity-building through specialized training programs for security personnel.
