In a recent meeting with major exporters and representatives of the Pakistan business community, Omar Shahid Butt, the President of the Pak-Africa Business Forum, highlighted the potential of Rwanda as a key entry point for Pakistan into Africa. The meeting was attended by participants from diverse sectors such as pharmaceuticals, textiles, IT, and electrical cables. The focus of the conversation was on strategies to bolster Pakistani exports to African countries, including Rwanda and Congo.
Embracing the Look Africa Initiative
Butt commended the Look Africa initiative, a venture aiming to strengthen Pak-Africa trade relations. However, he emphasized the need for backing from the private sector to push this initiative towards success. Butt committed his support to the government in this regard, as he believes it aligns with the country’s best interests.
Africa’s Wealth of Resources
Butt also drew attention to Africa’s rich resources, including mineral resources and raw materials, which Pakistan can potentially import. This strategy could provide benefits for Pakistani industries by allowing them to manufacture export products using these raw materials. Consequently, these products could then be exported back to Africa, creating a sustainable cycle of trade.
Existing Trade Relations and Future Opportunities
Interestingly, Butt pointed out that Pakistan already imports a significant quantity of tea from Rwanda. He also noted the vibrant IT industry in Rwanda, suggesting that collaboration in this sector could result in mutual benefits for both countries.
Speaking at the same event, the Pakistani High Commissioner-designate for Rwanda, Mr. Naeem Khan, identified numerous opportunities in Rwanda, particularly in the textile and pharma industries, which could be advantageous for Pakistan. He expressed that Rwanda has the potential to become a hub for Pakistani export products, allowing Pakistan to further export its goods to other countries from Rwanda.
Fostering Stronger Bilateral Ties
The discussions at the event culminated in an agreement between the attendees on the need to foster stronger ties between Pakistan and Africa. This sentiment was especially echoed by the Pak-Africa Business Forum, which has been instrumental in enhancing bilateral trade and economic relations between Pakistan and Africa.
