The Rwanda Governance Board (RGB) has temporarily suspended prayer gatherings at the Sanctuary of Yezu Nyirimpuhwe, located in Ruhango District, citing serious concerns over public safety and crowd management.
In an official letter dated May 17, 2025, addressed to Mgr Dr. Balthazar Ntivuguruzwa, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Kabgayi, RGB explained that the decision follows an assessment of the organization and attendance levels of monthly and annual prayer events hosted at the sanctuary.
According to RGB, the findings revealed that “the site where the prayers are held does not meet the required standards to ensure the safety and tranquility of pilgrims.”
The board referenced the April 27, 2025 prayer event, where overcrowding led to a stampede, injuring several attendees. Authorities expressed concern that such incidents, if unchecked, could lead to more severe consequences.
“In a bid to protect the lives and safety of worshippers who gather at the Yezu Nyirimpuhwe Sanctuary, we inform you that monthly and annual prayer gatherings at the site have been temporarily suspended until effective measures are implemented to prevent similar risks,” the letter stated.
Earlier this year, the Yezu Nyirimpuhwe Sanctuary had been elevated to international recognition, listed among other global sanctuaries dedicated to Divine Mercy. The site has become a prominent religious destination, attracting over 80,000 pilgrims from across Rwanda and beyond during major events.
The sanctuary is particularly known for testimonies of healing and spiritual transformation, drawing large crowds every first Sunday of the month. Pilgrims include both Rwandan nationals and international visitors.
The temporary suspension has sparked concern among the faithful, with many hoping for a swift resolution that will allow them to resume worship in a safer, better-organized environment.
